Honesty is an easy to grow biennial which displays vibrant purple flowers in Spring to provide early pollen for insects and bees. The shimmery silver seed pods are often used to add contrast to flower arrangements. It is happy in sunny or partially shaded areas and will usually naturalise if allowed.

Honesty belongs to the Brassicaceae (cabbage and mustard) family and all parts of the plant are edible. Leaves and flowers are great in salads. The plants grow to about 80cm in height.

Honesty is best grown as a biennial in Ireland though it is also considered a winter hardy annual. Sow seeds in late summer. Germination can take two to three weeks. Plant out in Autumn when there is still warmth in the soil.

  • If sowing directly in the soil wait until the soil has warmed up in early summer. There is no rush as a summer or early autumn sowing gives them plenty of time to get established before flowering the following year
  • They can be sown in trays or pots from a bit earlier if kept inside. Sow seeds 1cm deep in cell trays or pots.
  • When large enough to handle they can be hardened off and transplanted to their final location spaced 40cm apart
